The story
iPhupho L’ka Biko is a Johannesburg-based Afrikanist collective formed in Braamfontein in 2015 by bassist and composer Nhlanhla Ngqaqu. Their name carries a clear purpose: iPhupho speaks to dreams and divine fulfilment, while Biko honours Black Consciousness.
Their sound brings together jazz, indigenous African musical traditions, gospel, rhythm, horns and voice. It is music made for reflection, prayer, history, love, unity and revolution. The Azania collection extends that sound into tangible form - official pieces for listeners who carry the music beyond the room.
